adidas and Damian Lillard officially unveil “D Lillard 2” signature shoe
The second installment of Damian Lillard’s “D Lillard” shoe line with adidas has officially been released for public consumption. Monday adidas and Lillard released the “D Lillard 2” in “Rip City” and “Road” colorways. Lillard also tweeted that the “Rip City” shoes will make their NBA game debut for the first time in Monday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Both shoes obviously have Blazers colors in mind. There hasn’t been as much hype about other colorways and select local launches. But it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were to release more unique versions along the way.
It looks like there’s definitely a lot more going on with the design in the second iteration. There pattern on the outer soul and underneath are nods to Lillard’s Oakland, California roots. He also has acknowledgements to his neighborhood of Brookfield and “Suga Gee,” Gina Johnson, Lillard’s mother whose been a major force in his life.
Once again, affordability is a major part of Lillard’s signature shoe with this version selling at $105, which is pretty low for a signature basketball shoe. The Kyrie Irving’s are around the same price point.
The “Rip City” color way has a more old school feel with the gum sole, it actually reminds me of my Dad’s old Nike basketball shoes he had in the early 90’s. The road colorway also looks like it has more going on and the print on the shoe reminds me somewhat of the LeBron XI Terra Cotta Warrior.
There’s a lot of shade thrown adidas way for the fact that they spent reportedly spent an enormous sum of money to Derrick Rose, which unfortunately for them hasn’t paid off as much as they would have thought. They did sign James Harden, but he’s yet to have a signature shoe and by most accounts, his latest “Creators Never Follow” commercial hasn’t been received well amidst a disappointing season so far. Lillard’s deal has been reported as much less than both, but with his play on the court, his role as a leader on his team and his products off it, if anyone has been worth the money, it’s been him.
Here are more photos of the D Lillard 2 so you can check them out for yourself. The “Rip City” colorway comes out on January 22nd but they are having a “limited release” of that colorway on December 26 at adidas.com, Eastbay and Foot Locker stores. The “Road” version will be available February 5.
