Fernandez out against Suns, will not travel with team

TUALATIN, Ore. — Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez will not play Sunday night against the Phoenix Suns, Blazers coach Nate McMillan said.

Fernandez, who is recovering from a left quadriceps strain, will not travel with the team and will remain in Portland for treatment.

While the Blazers ran through an intense full-court scrimmage Saturday at the team’s practice facility, Fernandez sat on a training bench.

Fernandez suffered the strain during Portland’s 76-74 victory over Washington on Friday at the Rose Garden. He was held scoreless in 14 minutes of action, and did not play in the fourth quarter.

The second-year guard from Spain is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists this season.

After struggling during the first half of the season with injuries, Fernandez discovered his electric shooting touch in March. He had scored at least 10 points in five of Portland’s last six games prior to Friday’s contest against the Wizards, and had knocked down 60.6 percent (20 of 33) of his 3-point attempts during the stretch.

Fernandez has missed 19 games due to injury this season, dealing with back and leg pain.
