Fernandez says he is unlikely to play against Mavericks

Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez said he is unlikely to play Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks.

Fernandez, who is recovering from a left quadriceps strain, stated Tuesday he is hesistant to put a timeframe on his return. But Fernandez acknowledged that playing against the Mavericks is highly doubtful.

Blazers coach Nate McMillan said Fernandez is officially listed as day-to-day, and that his status will be closely monitored.

“I don’t want to say I play Thursday, because probably I don’t play,” Fernandez said. “But we will see today after the workout, the feeling. Practice tomorrow; more hard. And we’ll see Thursday.”

The second-year guard from Spain is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists this season.

Fernandez sat out Sunday’s loss to Phoenix, and he has missed 20 games this year due to injuries.
