County council changes meeting schedule

Anyone planning to attend a Clark County Council meeting should be aware the council recently changed its meetings schedule.

Because council meetings often run for three or four hours long, and sometimes more, the council added additional meeting days to spread out the workload. Meeting times for some elements, such as work sessions, may also change. For example, during its July 12 meeting, which began at 9 a.m., a work session on proposed employee salary changes was scheduled for 1 p.m.

The council meets primarily on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Under the old schedule, council meetings were held the first and third Tuesday of the month with the first Tuesday meeting held at 10 a.m. and the third Tuesday meeting held at 6 p.m.

The council will continue to meet at the same times on Tuesdays but will also meet at 10 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month. If needed, the county council may also meet at 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month.

If the second Tuesday meeting is not needed, a cancellation notice will be sent 24 hours in advance.

The council also scheduled 20-minute breaks during its Tuesday meetings. Daytime meetings will break from approximately 11:50 to 12:15 p.m. and evening meetings will break from approximately 7:50 to 8:15 p.m.

Breaks may also be taken during the Wednesday meetings, depending on how long the meetings run.

The county council additionally meets as the Board of Health at 8:30 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. No changes were made to these meetings.

County attorney Leslie Lopez noted during the council’s May 17 meeting that the current code and rules of procedure would need to be updated to reflect the changes. The rules of procedure were updated on May 16 noting that regular meetings are held on Tuesdays and other days as needed following a public hearing that same day.
