Rep. Herrera Beutler speaks on immigration proposal

It’s not often Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, sends out statements on current issues. When I ask, I’m typically able to gather a comment or two and share the representative’s thoughts with our readers.

But this weekend was different. President Donald Trump proposed another option for border security funding to reopen the government that included three-years of legal protection for DACA recipients. The deal was dead on arrival with Democratic leaders, according to NPR.

Herrera Beutler, however, argued the proposal is reasonable and asked Democrats to move the offer forward in a statement sent out to the media.

Here’s her statement in full.

“Two weeks ago after it became clear that President Trump and Congressional Democrats were no closer to resolution, I called on both parties to take a step out of their ideological corners and make concessions to the other side – commonsense concessions both sides had formerly embraced.

“The president did just that today by proposing a deal that includes legal certainty for Dreamers, which resembles legislation Democrats and Republicans have supported very recently. With this reasonable step toward compromise by the president, it’s up to congressional Democrats to do the same.

“It’s past time to end this standoff. Federal employees working without paychecks and American citizens being denied critical services demand that Congress find an immediate resolution. The president made a serious offer today, and I implore my Democrat colleagues to move toward compromise and help us end this government shutdown.”
