Here are Week 5 preview caps for high school football teams in Southwest Washington from Castle Rock to White Salmon.
Shelton (1-4, 1-0) vs. Evergreen (4-1, 1-0)
When: 4:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: McKenzie Stadium, Evergreen HS, 2211 NE 138th Ave., Vancouver
What: 3A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Shelton beat Heritage 28-19; Evergreen beat Kelso 42-35
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: Evergreen 26, Shelton 12, Sept. 20, 1996
Game notes: Shelton made its debut as a football member of the 3A Greater St. Helens League last week, and the Highclimbers notched their first win of the season by beating Heritage. But the road gets much tougher this week. Evergreen RB James Bethune is coming off a 211-yard rushing game on just 13 carries. Terrance Saryon caught six passes for 131 yards.
Prediction: Evergreen 38, Shelton 13
Mountain View (0-5, 0-1) vs. Heritage (3-2, 0-1)
When: 7 p.m. Thursday
Where: McKenzie Stadium, Evergreen HS, 2211 NE 138th Ave., Vancouver
What: 3A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Mountain View lost to Prairie 36-33; Heritage lost to Shelton 28-19
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: Mountain View 56, Heritage 12, Oct. 20, 2023
Game notes: Heritage has not posted a win against Mountain View since 2009. The Thunder have won the last 10 meetings. Mountain View is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Prairie, in which the Thunder built a 33-19 lead in the third quarter. To that point, it was the best game on offense the Thunder have played all season. But then the defense, which has been a strength all season, faltered, allowing Prairie to rally for the win. That loss marked the first time in school history the Thunder opened the season 0-5. But the season is not over for the Thunder, and they can get things started in the right direction against Heritage.
Prediction: Mountain View 34, Heritage 14
Battle Ground (3-2) vs. W.F. West (5-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: W.F West High Stadium, W.F. West HS, 342 SW 16th St, Chehalis
What: Non-league game
Last week: Battle Ground lost to Post Falls (ID) 45-6; W.F. West beat Aberdeen 47-12
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: W.F. West 24, Battle Ground 6, Sept. 28, 1984
Game notes: Battle Ground took the long trip to Post Falls, Idaho last week. And it was an even longer trip back after the Tigers were routed. Now, Battle Ground looks to rally against a W.F. West team that ranks No. 4 in Class 2A. The Bearcats have not allowed a team to score more than 13 points off them this season, while scoring 40 or more in four of five games.
Prediction: W.F. West 28, Battle Ground 13.
Camas (5-0) vs. Monroe (5-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Monroe High Stadium, Monroe HS, 17001 Tester Rd, Monroe
What: Non-league game
Last week: Camas beat Coeur d’Alene (ID) 38-21; Monroe beat Mountlake Terrace 48-7
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: Camas 55, Monroe 20, Nov. 8, 2013
Game notes: The road-warrior Papermakers, fresh off six-plus hour drive to Idaho and back to beat Coeur d’Alene, will roll north of Seattle to take on the No. 5-ranked team in Class 3A. The Bearcats are one spot behind Roosevelt, which Camas beat in Week 1. But the Papermakers have been rolling on offense since that Week 1 win. QB Jake Davidson is the region’s leading passer with 1,318 yards and 20 touchdowns. The senior has had back-to-back 300-yard games. Chase McGee is the leader in receiving yards with 574 yards on 30 catches. McGee had 12 catches for 195 yards last week. Monroe has won its last four games by an average of 46 points. But this will be the Bearcats’ first test of the season.
Prediction: Camas 28, Monroe 14
Prairie (3-2, 1-0) vs. Kelso (3-2, 0-1)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Schroeder Field, Kelso HS, 1904 Allen St, Kelso
What: 3A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Prairie beat Mountain View 36-33; Kelso lost to Evergreen 42-35
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Prairie 36, Kelso 33, Sept. 29, 2023
Game notes: When Prairie is playing well, the Falcons are a very dangerous team. They rallied from a 26-14 deficit to beat Battle Ground in Week 3 and rallied from a 33-14 deficit last week against Mountain View. The secret now for the Falcons is not falling into a big hole. They discovered that an early deficit can turn into a very big hole against Ridgefield and Dallas (Ore.). Kelso’ Aiden Mintonye continues to be the area’s top rusher with 966 yards and 14 touchdowns. The senior rushed for his fifth consecutive 100-yard game with 131 yards last week. But it took him a whopping 37 carries to get those yards. Prairie is 0-14 all-time at Schroeder Field. We’ve failed to correctly predict 4 of Prairie’s 5 games, so take this pick as a good sign.
Prediction: Kelso 28, Prairie 20.
Hudson’s Bay (0-5, 0-3) vs. Washougal (2-3, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Fishback Stadium, Washougal HS, 1201 39th St, Washougal
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Hudson’s Bay lost to Mark Morris 26-14; Washougal lost to Ridgefield 21-0
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Washougal 55, Hudson’s Bay 14, Oct. 6, 2023
Game notes: Hudson’s Bay is winless, but the Eagles were tied or leading at halftime in three of their five games. Washougal’s defense has been very good this year, allowing an average of 12 points a game this season. However, the Panthers’ offense is averaging just 11 points a game. The team that is able to make plays in the passing game and avoid turnovers will win.
Prediction: Washougal 20, Hudson’s Bay 16
Ridgefield (5-0, 3-0) vs. Mark Morris (2-3, 2-1)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Longview Memorial Stadium, R.A. Long HS, 2903 Nichols Blvd, Longview
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Ridgefield beat Washougal 21-0; Mark Morris beat Hudson’s Bay 26-14
Livestream: N2 Media YouTube channels
Last meeting: Ridgefield 42, Mark Morris 0, Oct. 6, 2023
Game notes: Ridgefield is coming off back-to-back shutout wins. Mark Morris bounced back last week after getting shut out by Washougal two weeks ago. So, Washougal shut out Mark Morris, and Ridgefield shut out Washougal. Not a good combination for the Monarchs, who scored a season-high 26 points last week. Mark Morris scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns last week to beat Bay. Ridgefield scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from Washougal.
Prediction: Ridgefield 27, Mark Morris 7
Hockinson (0-5, 0-3) vs. Columbia River (2-3, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: John O’Rourke Field, Columbia River HS, 800 NW 99th St, Vancouver
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Hockinson lost to Woodland 34-31; Columbia River beat R.A. Long 31-28
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Hockinson 28, Columbia River 7, Oct. 6, 2023
Game notes: Hockinson looks like a very dangerous 0-5 team after Aiden Donowitz threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns last week. But the Hawks also gave up 240 rushing yards. On the other hand, Columbia River came to life last week by running the ball. The Rapids grounded out 285 yards rushing against R.A. Long.
Prediction: Hockinson 24, Columbia River 20
R.A. Long (3-2, 2-1) vs. Woodland (3-2, 3-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Beaver Stadium, Woodland HS, 1500 Dike Access Rd, Woodland
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: R.A. Long lost to Columbia River 31-28; Woodland beat Hockinson 34-31.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Woodland 41, R.A. Long 0, Oct. 6, 2023
Game notes: Woodland has won the last 11 meetings with the Lumberjacks. R.A. Long had trouble stopping the run last week against Columbia River, derailing the Lumberjacks’ three-game winning streak. Now, they will try to slow down Woodland’s Elijah Andersen, who rushed for 224 yards last week.
Prediction: Woodland 24, R.A. Long 15
Stevenson (2-3, 1-2) vs. King’s Way Christian (3-2, 1-2)
When: 6 p.m. Friday
Where: Preece Memorial Stadium, King’s Way Christian Schools, 3606 NE 78th St, Vancouver
What: 1A Trico League game
Last week: Stevenson lost to Kalama 47-8; King’s Way Christian beat Columbia-White Salmon 28-7.
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: Stevenson 20, King’s Way Christian 14, Sept. 1, 2023.
Game notes: Ryan Charlton is coming off a big game last week against Columbia-White Salmon, rushing for 280 yards and three touchdowns. The Knights’ defense is also much improved from last season. That’s not good news for the Bulldogs, who were held to 14 and 8 points in their last two league losses.
Prediction: King’s Way Christian 24, Stevenson 8
Seton Catholic (5-0, 3-0) at Kalama (5-0, 3-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Chinook Stadium, Kalama HS, 548 China Garden Rd, Kalama
What: 1A Trico League game
Last week: Seton Catholic beat Fort Vancouver 57-0; Kalama beat Stevenson 47-8.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Kalama 61, Seton Catholic 19, Oct. 16, 2015
Game notes: After leaning heavily on quarterback Aiden Brown in the early weeks of the season, Kalama has been working on getting other players into the mix on offense the past couple of weeks. The Chinooks will need all the contributions they can get to keep up with Seton Catholic. The Cougars have weapons all over the field. The Cougars have won their five games by an average margin of 43 points and have allowed 33 total points on the season.
Prediction: Seton Catholic 35, Kalama 20
La Center (5-0, 3-0) vs. Fort Vancouver (0-5, 0-3)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, 800 E 40th St, Vancouver

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: La Center 47, Fort Vancouver 8, Oct. 8, 2021
Game notes: The Wildcats and Trappers are meeting for the first time since 2021 after opting not to face off the past two seasons. La Center’s defense has notched three shutouts on the season, while the offense averages 41 points a game.
Prediction: La Center 48, Fort Vancouver 6
Columbia-White Salmon (1-4, 0-3) vs. Castle Rock (3-2, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Rocket Stadium, Castle Rock HS, 5180 Westside Hwy, Castle Rock
What: Trico League game
Last week: Columbia-White Salmon lost to King’s Way Christian 28-7; Castle Rock lost to La Center 48-13
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Castle Rock 21, Columbia-White Salmon 6, Oct. 13, 2023
Game notes: After grinding out a Week 1 win over Hoquiam, Columbia-White Salmon is on a four-game skid as the Bruins have struggled to finish off drives with points. A win over Castle Rock could keep the Bruins’ postseason hopes alive. Meanwhile, Castle Rock are looking to stay on track for a pivotal Week 8 game against King’s Way Christian that could decide the fourth and final berth to the playoffs.
Prediction: Castle Rock 32, Columbia-White Salmon 13
Richland (4-1) vs. Skyview (3-2)
When: 4 p.m. Saturday
Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, 800 E 40th St, Vancouver
What: Non-league game
Last week: Richland lost to Kennewick 14-13; Skyview lost to Decatur 15-14
Livestream: Richland HS YouTube channel.
Last meeting: Richland 35, Skyview 7, Nov. 26, 2016
Game notes: After an impressive 3-0 start, the Storm are stumbling toward the start of the 4A GSHL play, which starts next week. Last week’s loss to Decatur was especially tough. The defense held Decatur’s offense scoreless for most of the game. The Gators’ first touchdown came on the third play of the game — a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown. That allowed the Storm to take a 14-7 lead into the fourth quarter when the defense got a fourth-down stop at the Skyview 42 with 2:13 to play. Trying to run out the clock, the Storm fumbled two plays later. Decatur drove 40 yards and scored a touchdown with 7 seconds to play, then converted a two-point conversion for the win. QB Doogie Poindexter returned from injury, passing for 107 yards on 10-of-18 passing and two interceptions. Richland, meanwhile, suffered its first loss by losing to the No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A. The Bombers won their first four games by an average margin of 46 points. Sophomore QB Jackson Woodard has passed for 1,270 yards and 22 touchdowns. Richland defense has intercepted 14 passes, returning three for TDs.
Prediction: Skyview 24, Richland 20
