Week 4 2004 high school football previews, predictions and livestream links
An 11-4 week of picks moved us to 36-15 (.706) on the season.
Week 4 figures to be a tough week for picks. Seven local teams are playing teams from out of state, which brings some uncertainty. Plus, it would appear the 2A Greater St. Helens League is going to be tough to predict. Three of our four misses last week came on 2A GSHL games.
Many schools provide livestreams on the NFHS Network. A monthly subscription costs $11.99. You can also get an annual subscription for $79.99 (an average of $6.67 a week).
Here are the Week 4 previews.
Kelso (2-1) vs. Bremerton (0-3)
When: 6 p.m. Thursday
Where: Bremerton Memorial Stadium, Bremerton HS, 1500 13th St, Bremerton
What: Non-league game
Last week: Kelso lost to Bellarmine Prep 27-24; Bremerton lost to Bainbridge 43-13.
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: After a monster 317-yard rushing game last week, Aden Mintonye is the region’s leading rusher with 686 yards and 10 touchdowns. Bremerton has scored just 27 points in three games this season. This game has all the makings of a warm-up for league play, which starts next week for Kelso.
Prediction: Kelso 34, Bremerton 7. Mintonye rush Hilanders to 3-1.
Kentlake (0-3) vs. Heritage (2-1)
When: 4:30 p.m. Friday
Where: McKenzie Stadium, Evergreen HS, 2211 NE 138th Ave., Vancouver
What: Non-league game
Last week: Kentlake lost to Enumclaw 68-0; Heritage lost to River Ridge 41-3.
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: Kentlake 48, Heritage 26, Nov. 7, 2000
Game notes: Last week was a hard dose of reality for the Timberwolves’ after two lopsided wins to open the season. But Kentlake could provide Heritage with a chance for another win before league play starts next week. The Falcons have been outscored 152-7 in the first three weeks of the season.
Prediction: Heritage 24, Kentlake 7. Timberwolves earn their first 3-1 start since 2016.
West Linn, Ore. (3-0) vs. Skyview (3-0)
When: 5 p.m. Friday
Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, 800 E 40th St, Vancouver
What: Non-league game
Last week: West Linn beat Sumner 34-27; Skyview beat Puyallup 38-8.
Livestream: Vancouver Public Schools YouTube channel.
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: Quarterback Doogie Poindexter left with an ankle injury last week, so Gavin Packer shined as his replacement, rushing for 130 yards with 85 coming on a touchdown run. After giving up 27 points in Week 1, the Skyview defense has been really solid. The Storm held Graham-Kapowsin to 17 points despite the Storm giving up five turnovers. Then Skyview shutdown Puyallup. The Storm will be put to the test with a talented West Linn squad. West Linn QB Baird Gilroy passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns against Sumner, but he also threw three interceptions. Danny Wideman had 11 catches for 132 yards. West Linn coach Jon Eagle returns to coach a game at Kiggins Bowl for the first time since 2019 when coaching Camas.
Prediction: West Linn 28, Skyview 20. Uncertainty on offense leads us to lean to Lions.
Mountainside, Ore. (1-2) vs. Mountain View (0-3)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: McKenzie Stadium, Evergreen HS, 2211 NE 138th Ave., Vancouver
What: Non-league game
Last week: Mountainside lost to Lakeridge 27-20; Mountain View lost to Union 21-0.
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: Mountainside of Beaverton, Ore., earned its lone win in Week 2 over Oregon City (35-28). The Mavericks also had a 24-21 loss to Silverton in Week 1. Mountain View has struggled on offense all season, scoring just 18 points in three weeks. The Thunder have been shut out over their last six quarters.
Prediction: Mountainside 23, Mountain View 13. Can’t pick the Thunder until they show progress on offense.
Battle Ground (2-1) vs. McKay, Ore. (0-3)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: McKay High School Stadium, McKay HS, 2440 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem, Ore.
What: Non-league game
Last week: Battle Ground lost to Prairie 43-38; McKay lost to Westview 38-22
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: McKay finally got something going on offense last week against Westview. The Royal Scots only managed eight total points in their first two losses. That won’t be nearly enough to keep up with a potent Battle Ground offense. The Tigers are looking to rebound defensively after allowing Prairie rally back to win last week. QB Ethan Adams leads the region in passing with 737 yards and seven touchdowns.
Prediction: Battle Ground 27, McKay 12. Tigers back in the win column.
Oregon City, Ore. (1-2) vs. Camas (3-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Doc Harris Stadium, 1125 NE 22nd Ave, Camas
What: Non-league game
Last week: Oregon City lost to Jesuit 38-15; Camas beat Lincoln-Tacoma 33-14.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Camas 63, Oregon City 20, Aug. 31, 2012.
Game notes: Camas’ offense to hitting on all cylinders. QB Jake Davidson passed for five touchdowns in a win over Lincoln. The Papermakers return home after two road games, and they’ll play two more after this one. This is a chance for Camas fans to see what the Papermakers are capable of on offense. They already saw how good the defense is. Oregon City has given up an average of 36 points over the past two weeks.
Prediction: Camas 42, Oregon City 6. Papermakers keep rolling.
Union (1-2) vs. Tualatin, Ore. (3-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Tualatin High Stadium, Tualatin HS, 22300 SW Boones Ferry Rd, Tualatin, Ore.
What: Non-league game
Last week: Union beat Mountain View 21-0; Tualatin beat Sherwood 55-35.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: Union made some positive steps in earning a first win of the season last week. QB Blake McDonald passed for 198 yards and two touchdowns. But the running game continues to struggle. The Titans only gained 18 net rushing yards last week. They’ll need to be better against a good Tualatin team that is average 58 points a game.
Prediction: Tualatin 40, Union 13. Timberwolves just too strong for Union.
Evergreen (2-1) vs. Westview, Ore. (1-2)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Westview High Stadium, Westview HS, 4200 NW 185th Ave, Beaverton, Ore.
What: Non-league game
Last week: Evergreen beat North Thurston 41-0; Westview beat McKay 38-22.
Livestream: None.
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: Evergreen’s defense has posted two shutouts already this season. The Plainsmen played well on defense in a loss to Puyallup, but a stalled offense put a lot of pressure on the defense in a Week 2 loss. Freshman Jayden Baum made positive strides in passing for 238 yards and four touchdowns last week, and James Bethune offered support with 84 yards rushing. Westview’s offense struggled in first two weeks, scoring 13 points in each loss. The Wildcats found success against a winless McKay team last week.
Prediction: Evergreen 24, Westview 6. Defense keeps Plainsmen going.
Prairie (2-1) vs. Dallas, Ore. (3-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Dallas High Stadium, Dallas HS, 1250 SE Holman Ave, Dallas, Ore.
What: Non-league game
Last week: Prairie beat Battle Ground 43-38; Dallas beat Beaverton 38-11
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: Prairie looked like a completely different team in Week 1 than the team that got running-clocked in Week 1 and that gutted out a gritty win against Washougal. Quarterback Deven Vigue was a big reason for that, rushing for 144 yards and 1 TD and passing for 235 and four scores. Now the Falcons take on an undefeated Dallas team. But the Dragons’ three wins have come against teams that are currently 1-2 (Glencoe, Ida B. Wells and Beaverton).
Prediction: Prairie 28, Dallas 23. Falcons continue to look better each week.
Hockinson (0-3, 0-1) vs. R.A. Long (2-1, 1-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Longview Memorial Stadium, R.A. Long HS, 2903 Nichols Blvd, Longview
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Hockinson lost to Ridgefield 24-21; R.A. Long beat Hudson’s Bay 22-21.
Livestream: N2 Media YouTube channel
Last meeting: Hockinson 30, R.A. Long 22, Sept. 21, 2023.
Game notes: R.A. Long could not get out of its way in a Week 1 loss to Castle Rock —turnovers, penalties, mistakes. But the Lumberjacks limited miscues last week, and they found ways to get the ball to their playmakers in space — TraMayne Jenkins and Taijon Reagins — to rally and beat Bay. The Hawks showed a lot of resiliency in battling against Ridgefield last week. QB Aiden Donowitz passed for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Turnovers likely will decide this game.
Prediction: Hockinson 28, R.A. Long 22. The Hawks turned their season around last year against R.A. Long and look to do that again.
Mark Morris (1-2, 1-0) vs. Washougal (1-2, 0-1)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Fishback Stadium, Washougal HS, 1201 39th St, Washougal
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Mark Morris beat Columbia River 14-0; Washougal lost to Woodland 12-0.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Washougal 48, Mark Morris 14, Sept. 21, 2023.
Game notes: Mike Peck’s teams have been known for their high-flying offenses. But the Monarchs got their first win last week by completely shutting down Columbia River. Now they face as Washougal team that is coming off a game last week in which the Panthers couldn’t get much of anything going on offense. Washougal has averaged 8 points a game this season. The Monarchs are averaging just under 11 points a game. Expect a defensive slugfest.
Prediction: Mark Morris 20, Washougal 7 Monarchs’ defense gets the job done.
Columbia River (1-2, 0-1) vs. Woodland (1-2, 1-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Beaver Stadium, Woodland HS, 1500 Dike Access Road, Woodland
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Columbia River lost to Mark Morris 14-0; Woodland beat Washougal 12-0.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Columbia River 26, Woodland 20, Sept. 21, 2023.
Game notes: After allowing several big plays in Week 1 against Kalama, the Woodland defense keeps playing better. Last week, the Beavers held Washougal to 101 yards of total offense. Columbia River only managed -2 net yards rushing against Mark Morris. The Rapids should expect to see a lot of Elijah Andersen, who rushed for 188 yards on 37 carries last week.
Prediction: Woodland 20, Columbia River 6. Andersen leads Beavers to 2-0 league start.
Ridgefield (3-0, 1-0) vs. Hudson’s Bay (0-3, 0-1)
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, 800 E 40th St, Vancouver
What: 2A Greater St. Helens League game
Last week: Ridgefield beat Hockinson 24-21; Hudson’s Bay lost to R.A. Long 22-21.
Livestream: Vancouver Public Schools YouTube channel.
Last meeting: Hudson’s Bay 28, Ridgefield 24, Sept. 21, 2023.
Game notes: The Hudson’s Bay plan is to run, run, run and run some more. The Eagles want to shorten the game by possessing the ball and finishing off drives with touchdowns. The Eagles were able to do that at times last week, but all three touchdowns came on fourth-down plays. The Spudders will counter with an efficient passing game led by Landon DeBeaumont. If Ridgefield can get the early lead and make Bay play catchup, that’s a game that the Eagles struggle at.
Prediction: Ridgefield 27, Hudson’s Bay 17. You’d expect a game between a 3-0 team and an 0-3 team would be more one-sided. But we aren’t likely to see a lot of one-sided games in the 2A GSHL this year.
La Center (3-0, 1-0) vs. King’s Way Christian (2-1, 0-1)
When: 6 p.m. Friday
Where: Preece Memorial Stadium, King’s Way Christian Schools, 3606 NE 78th St, Vancouver
What: 1A Trico League game
Last week: La Center beat Columbia-White Salmon 61-0; King’s Way Christian lost to Kalama 30-20.
Livestream: King’s Way Christian Schools YouTube channel
Last meeting: La Center 42, King’s Way Christian 6, Sept. 29, 2023.
Game notes: La Center returned two interceptions for a touchdown and returned the only kickoff they received in the game for a score. And that was more than enough for the La Center defense that had pitched back to back shutouts. King’s Way did well to fight back against Kalama after falling behind 30-0. The Knights can’t afford to do that against the Wilcats.
Prediction: La Center 42, King’s Way Christian 7. Wildcats just too strong for King’s Way.
Fort Vancouver (0-3, 0-1) at Kalama (3-0, 1-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Chinook Stadium, Kalama HS, 548 China Garden Rd, Kalama
What: 1A Trico League game
Last week: Fort Vancouver lost to Stevenson 57-14; Kalama beat King’s Way Christian 30-20.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Vancouver 18, Kalama 0, Nov. 15, 1930.
Game notes: The Trappers could not stop big plays against Stevenson, and big plays are what Kalama is really good at. Aiden Brown figures to have a big game running the ball against Fort.
Prediction: Kalama 48, Fort Vancouver 6. Chinooks roll to 4-0 start.
Castle Rock (2-1, 0-1) vs. Stevenson (2-1, 1-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Stevenson High Stadium, Stevenson HS, 390 NW Gropper Rd, Stevenson
What: 1A Trico League game
Last week: Castle Rock lost to Seton Catholic 48-14; Stevenson beat Fort Vancouver 57-14.
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: Castle Rock 42, Stevenson 0, Oct. 18, 2019.
Game notes: Stevenson sophomore QB Jude Travinski threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns against Fort Vancouver. But most of his passes were short passes with a lot of run-after-the-catch. If the Rockets can bottled the Bulldogs up close to the line of scrimmage, Stevenson might find yards hard to come by. But Castle Rock allowed some big plays against Seton Catholic last week. The Rockets want to find some more consistency in the rush game.
Prediction: Castle Rock 27, Stevenson 20. Rockets come up with big plays on defense to turn the tide.
Columbia-White Salmon (1-2, 0-1) vs. Seton Catholic (3-0, 1-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Seton Catholic Football Field, Seton Catholic HS, 9000 NE 64th Ave, Vancouver
What: 1A Trico League game.
Last week: Columbia-White Salmon lost to La Center 61-0; Seton Catholic beat Castle Rock 48-14.
Livestream: Seton Catholic Athletics YouTube channel
Last meeting: Seton Catholic 35, Columbia-White Salmon 20, Sept. 29, 2023.
Game notes: Nothing went right for Columbia-White Salmon last week against La Center. The Bruins threw five interceptions and couldn’t get much going on offense. Now they face a Seton Catholic team with a high-powered offense and a defense that had held opponents to 14 points or fewer in the first three games.
Prediction: Seton Catholic 48, Columbia-White Salmon 6. Cougars keep on rolling along.
