Week 8 roundup, how Clark County players fared

It was a history-making day for Garrett Grayson and Colorado State.

Meanwhile, Battle Ground grad Kevin Haynes and Prairie grad Jesse Zalk played big roles as Central Washington rallied to win its homecoming game.

Colorado State

Garrett Grayson, Heritage, Sr. QB — Heritage alum Garrett Grayson is now the top passer in Colorado State school history.

In the third quarter of Saturday’s 16-13 win over Utah State, Grayson passed the mark of 7,142 yards, set by Kelly Stouffer in 1986. He now has 7,250 yards with five regular-season games to play.

Grayson completed 20 of 31 passes for 243 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Colorado State (6-1) is bowl-eligible for the second consecutive year.

Central Washington

Kevin Haynes, Battle Ground, Fr.* LB — The middle linebacker had a team-high 10 tackles in the Wildcats’ 24-20 homecoming win over Western Oregon.
Central was protecting a 24-17 lead with less than five minutes to play. Western Oregon drove inside the 10 yard line looking to tie the game. But Haynes and the Wildcats defense held Western to a field goal.

“Anytime we’re in the red zone, we have this saying, ‘one mind, one body, we’re all together,'” said Haynes. “We’re going to dig our cleats in and stop them, or at least hold them to a field goal.”

Nine of Haynes’ tackles were solo. He leads the team with 66 tackles through seven games.

Jesse Zalk, Prairie, So. WR — Had the game-winning touchdown catch, a 14-yard reception with 7:38 to play that broke a 17-17 tie. He finished with a team-high 11 catches for 85 yards and a 28-yard kickoff return.

Josh Stolz, Mountain View, So. OL — Normally the starting left guard, Stolz did not play after suffering a knee injury two weeks ago.
Gabe Rego, Union, So. LB — Played but did not record a tackle.
Kaben Humphrey-Butler, Union, So. WR — Did not play.
Tyler Grant, Prairie, Fr. OL — Did not play.

His final touchdown came with 24 seconds left in Saturday’s clash between two top-five NAIA teams. Southern Oregon tried to tie the game with a two-point conversion, which was incomplete.
