Week 3 roundup: How Clark County players fared

From a senior quarterback at a big school to a redshirt freshman linebacker at a smaller one, the third full week of college football had Clark County athletes have big games in a variety of ways.

Each week, Tailgate Talk will publish a list of each local player whose college teams were in action.

Colorado State

Garrett Grayson, Heritage, Sr. QB — Threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns in Colorado State’s 49-21 win over UC-Davis.

The senior completed 22 of 31 passes with eight completions going for more than 20 yards. He had TD passes of 52, 45, 20 and 15 yards with no interceptions.

Grayson has thrown for more than 400 yards in two consecutive games and is the first Colorado State player to do so since Terry Nugent in 1983. CSU improved to 2-1 on the season.

“Last week we lost, so it didn’t really mean much to me,” Grayson said. “It means a little more that I could help us get a win. … All I care about is winning, so I was very happy with the way we executed today.”

Central Washington

Kevin Haynes, Battle Ground, Fr.* LB — Had two interceptions and a team-high nine tackles in the Wildcats’ 48-14 win over Dixie State. That helped the Wildcats improve to 1-1 on the season.
Josh Stolz, Mountain View, So. OL — Started at left guard for an offense that rushed 64 times for 272 yards and allowed just one sack.
Jesse Zalk, Prairie, So. WR — Had three catches for 26 yards including a 15-yard TD reception. He also had a 19-yard kickoff return and two rushes for 6 yards.
Kaben Humphrey-Butler, Union, So. WR — Saw action Saturday but did not catch a pass.
Gabe Rego, Union, So. LB — Played, but did not record a tackle.
Tyler Grant, Prairie, Fr. OL — Did not play.
Leon Siofele, Union, Fr. RB — Did not play.

Eastern Oregon

John Payne, Camas, So.* DB — Had four tackles (two solo) and one pass broken up in Eastern Oregon’s 35-31 loss to No. 22-ranked Southern Oregon. The Mountaineers fell to 1-1 on the year and 0-1 in Frontier Conference play.
Jorden Payne, Camas, Fr. DB — Had one solo tackle.
Jonathan Branson, Columbia River, Fr. Ath — Did not play.

Montana

Mitch Saylor, Union, Sr. TE — Had two catches for 22 yards including a 12 yard touchdown reception in Montana’s 28-20 win over South Dakota. The No. 4-ranked Grizzlies improved to 2-1 in front of a record home crowd of 26,303.

Saylor talked about the buildup to Saturday’s 7 p.m. kickoff with The Missoulian. “It kind of takes me back to high school and I get all excited, like a little kid. You have so much time sitting around during the day thinking about what’s going to happen. All I can think about is the game.”

Ellis Henderson, Skyview, Jr. WR — Had two catches for six yards and one rush for minus-10 yards.

Montana State

Odin Coe, Camas, Jr. DE — Had four tackles and one pass breakup and half a sack in Montana State’s 43-33 win over Central Arkansas. The Bobcats improved to 2-1.

Jed Barnett, Union, Sr. P — Punted five times for an average of 38.0 yards and a long of 45 in No. 4-ranked Oklahoma’s 34-10 win over Tennessee.

Oregon State

Drew Clarkson, Camas, Fr. OL — Bye week.

Portland State

Kieran McDonagh, Skyview, Jr. QB — Completed 31 of 51 passes for 269 yards in Portland State’s 59-21 loss at Washington State. The junior had a 24-yard TD pass and an interception as Portland State fell to 1-2.
Brandon Brody-Heim, Union, Jr. LB — Started at strong-side linebacker. Had three tackles (2 solo).
John Norcross, Camas, Fr.* LB — Had three tackles, all solo.

Southern Oregon

Austin Dodge, Skyview, Sr., QB — Completed 29 of 46 passes for 323 yards as the No. 22 Raiders beat Eastern Oregon 35-31 to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Frontier Conference. Dodge had  touchdown passes of 29 and 5 yards and an 18-yard touchdown run. But he also had three interceptions.

Washington
