4A STATE FIRST ROUND

WHEN, WHERE: 3 p.m. Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium, Pasco

LAST WEEK: Skyview beat Olympia 38-27; Chiawana beat Gonzaga Prep 37-35

GAME NOTES: Skyview was the No. 2 team in the 4A Greater St. Helens League. QB Brody Barnum, who signed with Washington State to play baseball this wek, is coming off a 39-1yard, 3-TD game against Olympia. That gave him 2,079 yards and 18 TDs for the season. He has also rushed for 554 yards and 5 TDs. An injury to RB Hayden Froeber (892 rushing yards, 9 TDs) has changed the Storm’s approach on offense. But it also has provided opportunity for WR Jeremiah Wright (11 catches, 214 yards, 3 TDs last week) to shine and give Barnum a second big threat along with Tavis Pinkney (43 catches, 676 yards, 6 TDs). This is the first meeting between the Storm and Riverhawks. However, Skyview coach Steve Kizer and Chiawana coach Steff Graff were assistant coaches at Walla Walla Community College in the 1980s. Kizer was a groomsman at Graff’s wedding. Chiawana rolled to a 7-0 record, outscoring opponents 47-9. Then the Riverhawks turned the ball over eight times in a 21-14 loss to Richland. Chiawana struggled to beat a 3-7 Walla Walla team 14-12. But the Riverhawks got back on track last week, forcing six turnovers to rally to beat defending state champion Gonzaga Prep 37-35. RB Andrew Vargas rushed 39 times for 306 yards and 4 TDs last week. He has rushed for 2,538 yards and 39 TDs for the season.
