Camas goes with familiar name as new girls basketball coach

Scott Preuninger is leaving Heritage to return to the Camas coaching ranks.

Only, instead of boys basketball, he will take over as the head coach of the girls basketball program.

Preuninger resigned his position as the boys basketball coach at Heritage this week, and he has been named the girls basketball coach at Camas.

“It’s by far the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make as far as a coaching move,” Preuninger said.

Preuninger, a teacher at Camas, will return to the bench at the school he coached boys basketball for eight seasons before resigning in the fall of 2011.

Last year, Preuninger took over the Heritage boys program.

“I wouldn’t have gone to Heritage if I knew I’d be leaving after a year,” Preuninger said. “The plan was to be there a good five years and see if we could make this thing go. I never thought about the girls job opening up at Camas.”

Chuck Knight resigned as the girls coach in August.

“I’m excited to be back in Camas coaching,” said Preuninger, now in  his 13th year as a teacher at Camas. “I’m excited to try my hand at coaching girls during a high school season.”

Preuninger said he has coached girls basketball at the AAU level.

He also is excited to be taking over a program that is established, a consistent winner.

“They play hard. They really listen. They’re teachable and coachable,” Preuninger said of the Papermakers.

Camas reached the state round of 16 in 2012 and again last winter.

Heritage athletic director Leta Meyer said the search for a replacement for Preuninger has already started.
