Athletes of the week nominees 4/22

Nominees for The Columbian prep athlete of the week for the week of April 14-20.

There were several track and field standouts, but we picked a couple from the prestigious Oregon Relays. Softball season just got started with league play, while baseball should conclude its league schedule this coming week. Fun times indeed.

Alexa Efraimson, Camas girls track and field: We hope Clark Country running enthusiasts are appreciating what we are witnessing here. Another race, another oh-my moment. Efraimson clocked in at 2 minutes, 9.63 seconds in the 800 meters at the Oregon Relays. That’s the third fastest time in the nation this season.

Emmanuel Gil, Hockinson soccer: Scored both goals for the Hawks in a 2-1 win over Ridgefield. The victory tied the Hawks for first place with Ridgefield in the 2A Greater St. Helens League.

Colby Gilbert, Skyview boys track and field: The Oregon Relays brought out the best in Gilbert, as well. He won the 3,000 meters in Eugene with a time of 8 minutes, 29.29 seconds, topping a field of 35 of the top runners from several states. He also took fourth in the 1,500.

Harli Hubbard, Camas softball: Hey, look at that! Class 4A Greater St. Helens League is playing league games this year! Hubbard started the league season with a no-hitter. She struck out 11 in Camas’ 2-0 win over the Skyview Storm.

J.T. Kaul, Mountain View baseball: He probably did not want this week to end. Actually, he’s been solid all season. But this week was special. He threw 13 innings in two starts, striking out 25, and Mountain View won 1-0 and 3-0.  In three games with his bat, he went 4 for 11 with two doubles. First place Mountain View won all three games.
