Athletes of the week nominees 4/8

Nominees for The Columbian prep athlete of the week for the week of March 25-April 6. (Yes, we know that’s two weeks. But there were very few games on Spring Break and we wanted to wait until everyone was back in school before voting could begin.)

Alec Chaney, Skyview baseball: Broke out of a slump on Tuesday, March 26, and then just continued crushing the ball. Had a two-run double to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning against Union. With that hit, and his next three games — all Skyview wins — Chaney went 6 for 10 with a home run and drove in nine runs. He also was the starting pitcher when Skyview used three pitchers in a no-hitter.

Micah Merfeld, Union boys track and field: Won three events in a dual against Battle Ground in his first competition of the season. He won the javelin, the high jump, and the long jump. His high jump of 6-2 is tied for sixth best in all of Class 4A this season.

Emily Morgan, Columbia River girls track and field: She raced to a 100-meter win in 12.2 seconds, which would be a school record. As of today, that time is not listed on athletic.net, but one thing is certain: She is fast.

Jamie Stilwell, Prairie girls golf: She carded a 1-under-par 35 at The Cedars in a three-team match against Camas and Evergreen, setting a school record for a nine-hole match.

Brian Wright, Columbia River boys soccer: Wright had an assist in River’s 1-0 win over Mountain View, then had two goals and an assist in a win over Hudson’s Bay. The Chieftains opened the 3A GSHL season with two wins.
