Celebrating good times

Got a call today from Seton Catholic girls soccer coach. He was reporting on his team’s match Tuesday. The joy in his voice also reminded me of a couple of things I witnessed the past weeks in high school sports coverage.

First, there was the atmosphere at Heritage High School last week for the Skyview-Heritage volleyball match. Skyview has now won four league titles in a row. A couple years ago, the Storm did not even lose a game during a match. And it has been a long, long time since Skyview had to go to five games in a league match.

Well, last week, Heritage took Skyview to five games. And while there are not a lot of fans at volleyball matches, the students who did show for Heritage were loud and supportive. And after the match, those students rushed the floor to high-five their classmates. No, Heritage did not win. But they took Skyview to the limit, and that was worthy of celebration.

Congrats to the Timberwolves and their fans. And, of course, congrats to the Storm for another strong 4A GSHL volleyball season.

Tonight (Tuesday), Seton Catholic girls soccer coach David McPherson called to report his team’s score: Seton Catholic 2, Castle Rock 1, in overtime.

It just happened to be Seton’s first victory of the year. Lucy Difilippis scored on an assist from Brynna Frietag for the overtime winner.

“It was the first win of the season. It was the last game of the season. And these kids thought they won the world championship,” McPherson said. “The whole school ran onto the field after the game. All 42 of them.”

I already wrote about the 4A district tennis championship between Union’s Alex Wallace and Kent Andreasen of Skyview. It was a compelling match, won by Wallace in three sets. But I just have to praise their friendship again. It’s fun to watch people who are so competitive but also have so much respect for one another. High school tennis players have to call their own lines — the honor system. Well, with these two, it’s pretty much understood that anything close is in, and you keep playing. Makes for some great points.
