Camas soccer tops River

The Camas Papermakers got the best of the Columbia River Chieftains in the first match between these rivals of the 2010 girls soccer season.

Raya Klein and Carly Marshall scored first-half goals, and the Camas defense suffocated the defending state champions throughout the night in a 2-0 victory.

“The girls were ready for it, all day long, ” Camas coach Roland Minder said of this match. “A couple said they didn’t sleep last night. They were anxious to get the game on.”

Minder credited the back line of Maiah Sharma, Annike Sumpter, Kailee Esser, and Emily Ainsworth, along with defensive midfielder Adrienne Engel for their play.

“That block of five, they really do a good job,” the coach said, adding this was the first match that unit has been together.

“I think we found what we need.”

Andrea Soderberg and Jamie Carter combined for the shutout in the net.
