Union wins Elliott Cup

Belex Cheng and Jessica Barack teamed up to win the final hole, clinching the Elliott Cup for the Union Titans at Three Rivers Golf Course in Kelso.

The Cup — a Ryder Cup-type competition — featured last year’s top two teams from the 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens leagues.

Cheng and Barack were all-square with Betsy Howd and Kara Amber of Camas going into the final hole. Cheng and Barack got the job done in the alternate shot format, giving the Titans a 21/2-1/2 victory Wednesday.

Union’s Mykala Kolanda and Lauren Williams had already won their match, 4-and-2, in the championship round of the four-team, 18-hole event.

Union defeated Battle Ground 5-1 in singles play on the front nine for the first-round of this event. Camas topped Kelso 31/2-21/2 to advance to the finals.

Other highlights from this event, courtesy of Union coach Gary Mills:

  • Betsy Howd of Camas made a 10-foot par putt on the ninth hole of her singles match, preserving a tie and clinching the first-round victory for the Papermakers.
  • Match of the day: Defending 4A district champion Maddy Alamillo of Battle Ground won the final hole for a 1-up victory over defending 3A district champion Kayla Jech of Union. Alamillo shot a 39. Jech fired a 41.

The Elliott Cup is named for Hudson’s Bay teacher/coach Janet Elliott, who has announced her retirement after more than 30 years on the job.
