MoveOn Clark County tries new form of protest

In Saturday’s downpour, more than 40 protesters gathered at Northeast 117th Avenue and Northeast 76th Street to sing carols. These were not your typical Christmas carols, however. “Jingle Bells,” for example, became “Jingle Bill.” Classic tune “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” was revamped to “We Wish For a Better Tax Plan.”

The carolers were part of MoveOn Clark County and sung in protest of the Republican tax plan.

Mary Laski, member of MoveOn, said despite the pouring rain that deterred additional carolers, they found a new and improved protest site.

“When you go to Jaime’s (Herrera Beutler) office, we are only there, no one sees us but ourselves,” Laski said. “Jaime is never there, her staff is rarely there and there are no passersby. So if you’re trying to raise awareness to have an impact it seems a street with more traffic will raise more awareness than standing outside Jaime’s office talking to yourself.”

Laski seemed optimistic that their caroling reached a decent number of Vancouver residents. Here’s a few bars from their version of holiday classics.

“We wish for a better tax bill, we wish for a better tax bill, we wish for a better tax bill and remember we vote.
We won’t stop until we get it, we won’t stop until we get it, we won’t stop until we get it and remember we vote.”

“Voting through the night on an oh so secret bill it is just not right to pass this awful swill, fight the bill fight the bill fight it all the way”
