Let me tell you ’bout my best friend …

Since the sun has been making a few appearances lately, I wanted to share a photograph that evokes warmth.

Doesn’t this photograph of Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt and Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart, taken during a summertime ride for local policy makers, make you think of that “Best Friend” song by Harry Nilsson?

People let me tell you ’bout my best friend
He’s a warm-hearted person who’ll love me to the end
People let me tell you ’bout my best friend
He’s a one boy cuddly toy my up my down my pride and joy

People let me tell you now he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talking man to man
Or whether we’re talking son to son
Cause he’s my best friend now

I admit when I first saw this photograph, I had questions. As did every co-worker I showed it to: Why are they wearing matching shirts? Why is Steve riding a girls’ bike? Is Tim, with his trendy bike pants, too hip to be mayor? Is that I basket I see on the back of Steve’s bike? Does Steve’s helmet fit properly?

But then we all just decided to enjoy the photo as a symbol of hope that the city and county can work out their differences.

I mean, you certainly never saw Royce Pollard and Betty Sue Morris cycling together.
