Longtime Vancouver City Attorney Ted Gathe has informed City Manager Eric Holmes and members of the city council that he’ll retire in July.

Gathe has survived, by my count, five city managers (the late Paul Grattet, John Fischbach, Vernon Stoner, Pat McDonnell and Eric Holmes) and has kept a low profile (judging from the angry call I took from an elderly-sounding resident today demanding to know who the city attorney is and questioning why he’s not an elected official.)

Vegas has chief assistant city attorney Bronson Potter a near lock to get the job, but since Potter hasn’t stopped smiling since leaving his post as chief civil attorney for Clark County, I don’t even know if he wants it.

Here’s Gathe’s Dec. 27 resignation announcement, which was provided to me today under my standing public disclosure request for council emails.
