Auditor candidates on Troy Kelley

The state auditor candidates visited with The Columbian’s editorial board this week.

Of course they couldn’t leave the meeting without addressing  the controversial current Auditor Troy Kelley.

Kelley, a Democrat from Tacoma, was accused of stealing $3 million from customers from his former real-estate service business.

Democratic Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy didn’t really want to say whether she thought Kelley was guilty.

“I believe in the legal system,” she said.

But after a deadlocked jury, the legal system didn’t completely clarify the matter.

When pressed, McCarthy conceded, “I would believe that if there’s smoke, there’s fire and there’s probably something Mr. Kelley did that was not appropriate.”

Republican Sen. Mark Miloscia was more straightforward, “I thought he was guilty.”
